5 Facts You Need to Know About Vapor Barriers
As a homeowner in Puget Sound, there are a lot of things to know about taking care of your home in our damp climate. And that includes the importance of vapor barriers. That’s especially true if you’ve just moved to the Evergreen State. Read on to discover everything you need to know.

Know How to Protect Your Home from Intruders
- Moisture (excess humidity)
- Pests (rodents & birds)
These two things can destroy your most significant investment faster than you can say, “I smell a rat!” Underneath your home rests your crawlspace. When it’s well taken care of, and in excellent condition, your home is protected. If it’s neglected and in less than stellar shape – you could be in for some costly problems!

Here’s what the Seattle Government has to say about crawl space protection:
“Crawl space walls and exposed earth in unvented crawl spaces shall be covered with a Class 1, black vapor retarder with overlapping joints taped.”
One of the big advantages of a vapor barrier is its insulating features. It protects your home from moisture to keep it dryer. With professional vapor barrier installation, you can save you money on your energy bills because it keeps the damp out. Plus, with a new clean vapor barrier, you’ll be able to spot any intrusions or leaks easier.

Find Out What Rodents Don't Want You To Know
When it comes to pests and rodents, one thing they don’t want you to know is where they’re living. And, one of their favorite hiding places is your insulation. Not only does it keep your house warm, but it’s also the perfect place for rodents like rats, and mice to make their nests.
That’s why it’s essential to have your insulation checked regularly by a professional. Make sure you have both your attic and crawlspace inspected. By doing this, you’ll protect your insulation and extend its life. Plus, by taking care of your insulation, you’ll save money with lower energy costs, and you won’t be surprised by substantial rodent or moisture damage and costly insulation replacement.
The Surprising Cure for The Common Cold
The Surprising Cure for The Common Cold
Are you and your family sneezing and wheezing? Have you ever considered the solution could be a new vapor barrier?
We know that sounds funny, but it’s true. Excess moisture is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. When that leaks into your home from under your house, you and your family can have respiratory problems.
So when we hear of families suffering from colds, congestions, breathing problems, and compromised immune systems, we first check the condition of their vapor barrier. Often we find:
- There is no vapor barrier.
- The current vapor barrier is damaged.
- The crawl space is contaminated.
Here are the Basic Installation Steps
Here are the Basic Installation Steps
- Clean out the crawlspace and get rid of any waste, garbage, dead rodents, etc.
- Pull out the old vapor barrier (if there is one).
- If there’s water – install a high-quality sump pump to drain it.
- Seal the sides of the walls about 2 feet up with the 6-mil or 9-mil plastic.
- Make sure the seam is straight and there are no wrinkles or openings.
- Workaround any pipes or equipment and don’t leave any gaps.
- Now start on the floor by spreading the plastic out (white side up).
- Leave any wires or cables on top of the plastic to you can get to them later.
- Once the white plastic is down we take off our boots so it stays clean.
- Overlap the seam and tape it very securely.
- Wrap all wall supports.
